Beginner to Skilled DJ
Goal: By the end of the course, the student should be able to mix tracks smoothly, beatmatch manually, and understand fundamental DJing concepts.
Session 1: Introduction to DJing & Equipment Basics
📌 Objective: Understand the role of a DJ, equipment setup, and basic operations.
🛠 Topics Covered:
- What is DJing? (Mixing, transitions, performance)
- Overview of DJ gear (Mixer, turntables/CDJs, controllers, laptop, Rekordbox)
- Understanding software (Rekordbox, Serato, or Traktor)
- Basic music theory (BPM, bars, beats, phrasing)
🎯 Practice: Student explores Rekordbox and loads tracks into decks.
Session 2: Beatmatching & Tempo Control
📌 Objective: Learn how to manually match tempos without relying on sync.
🛠 Topics Covered:
- What is beatmatching? Why it matters
- Using jog wheels and pitch faders to adjust tempo
- How to listen and match beats by ear
🎯 Practice: Student tries beatmatching two tracks with different BPMs manually.
Session 3: Basic Mixing & EQ Control
📌 Objective: Smooth transitions between tracks using EQs.
🛠 Topics Covered:
- Understanding the frequency spectrum (Bass, mids, highs)
- Using EQ to blend tracks
- Basic transition methods (fade, EQ blend, volume control)
🎯 Practice: Student mixes two tracks while controlling EQs smoothly.
Session 4: Phrasing & Song Structure in Mixing
📌 Objective: Learn how to mix tracks at the right moment.
🛠 Topics Covered:
- Understanding song structure (Intro, drop, breakdown, outro)
- Mixing in and out at the right phrase
- Counting beats and bars in electronic music
🎯 Practice: Student transitions between tracks at the correct phrase.
Session 5: Using Effects & Hot Cues for Creative Mixing
📌 Objective: Add creativity using hot cues and FX.
🛠 Topics Covered:
- Setting and using hot cues for quick jumps
- Basic FX (reverb, delay, filter, flanger)
- Using FX tastefully in a mix
🎯 Practice: Student adds effects and hot cues to transitions.
Session 6: Recording a Mini DJ Set
📌 Objective: Build confidence and apply all learned techniques.

- How to plan a short DJ set (track selection, energy flow)
- Recording and listening back for improvements
🎯 Practice: Student records a 10-15 minute mix and reviews it.
